A new national poll finds Sanders would beat Trump if they went head-to-head in the general election

ernie Sanders would beat Donald Trump 51-38 in a general-election match-up, according to the latest poll from Quinnipiac University. Or — to put it in the course vernacular that Trump introduced to America this week — the billionaire would get "schlonged" by the democratic socialist.

"Sen. Bernie Sanders hammers him," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. Hillary Clinton, the poll suggests, would also put Trump in his place — "Hillary Clinton tops him," added Malloy — though by a more modest 47-40.

That wasn't the only bad news for Trump, and by extension the GOP, to come out of the national poll: 61 percent of Americans say the Republican frontrunner "does not share their values," 58 percent believe he "is not honest and trustworthy,"and 57 percent say he "does not care about their needs and problems."

Most striking is the disconnect between GOP voters and the rest of the electorate of Trump's viability as a general-election candidate. Fully 70 percent of GOP voters are convinced Trump would have a good chance of winning in November 2016. Just 41 percent of Americans at large hold the same view, with a majority (51 percent) holding that Trump "does not have a good chance of winning."

In the race for the Republican nomination, the poll shows Trump still leading a divided field. With 28 percent support, Trump bests Texas Sen. Ted Cruz by 4 points, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by 14 points. The poll finds that both Cruz and Rubio would prove more formidable general-election competitors. Against either Clinton or Sanders, both Cruz and Rubio make the 2016 election, effectively, a tossup.

I recently heard a Republican pollster talk about Trump, and for once, I totally agree with his conclusions.

His argument was that Republicans NEED to nominate Trump as their candidate. He WILL lose, and that that would be good for the entire nation.

He's entirely right. Think about it. Even after Obama beat Romney, like many liberals with a sense of humor, I watched FOX News that night, to see what spin they'd put on it. It was fun. As many of you also saw, or read later, they literally had no idea it was coming and were completely caught off guard. It was educational to see just how willfully ignorant the far right actually is.

The Republican Party seriously thinks the only reason they've been losing lately is that they haven't picked from the EXTREME bottom of the conservative barrel. NOW'S THEIR CHANCE! They can finally have their dream candidate. Trump is everything they've always wanted.

Now, they're going to see him get trounced in the general election.

WHY THIS IS GOOD FOR EVERYONE: They need to get trounced so they can realize the majority of this country doesn't share their views, so they can move on. When they do finally move on (and they will, eventually), we could get back to an honest competition. They could present us with an ordinary "conservative" (rather than a far-right lunatic conservative). That would take the thunder away from people like Clinton. The Democratic Party would have to respond with a true liberal (for balance).

Agree with most of your thoughtful comments. Except this. The right fully understands the majority don't share their views--THEY DON'T CARE. They take great pride in obstructing Obama, Democratic 'leaders' and us. Their agenda is to impose GOP will and policies on the majority. In this way--and others--they've functioned as authoritarians for quite some time. They won't give this up without a huge fight.

For those reasons, I'm not so sure they'll 'move on' and "get back to an honest competition".

My guess is they'll continue to disrupt and sabotage by
any means possible. It will take significant Republican loses in the Senate and House before we'll begin to see progressive change. That's why its critical to participate and VOTE in every election, not just the Presidential elections.

They devastated the planet, our economy, people's rights, jobs and retirement, our system of government, oversight agencies & education. They've wreaked so much damage in so many important areas (installing climate deniers on committees & in positions of influence, for instance), it will take decades of progressive policies to fix this.

IMO, this is why it's so important to elect Bernie. Hillary will 'tweak' things a bit, but as we know, she's beholden to banks, corporations and Wall Street to BUY the Presidency.

As demonstrated for 43 years, Bernie is dedicated to REAL CHANGE to stop corporate and government corruption. He's determined to make our country work for us all again.

I'm not suggesting the right will suddenly become sane or rational. I'm only suggesting that the right will become organized and will stand up to the most extreme parts of its own ranks, if only to continue its influence. The House of Representatives is pretty much theirs to keep from now on. It's so gerrymandered that it would be almost impossible to arrest it away from them. That's still not enough for them. They want the White House back, and they think it's sort of their birthright to rule everything. When that's denied them, they'll kick and scream, but they'll do whatever it takes to, once again, make it happen. They'll start listening to people like Rubio. Rubio is a nut-case as well, but he's considered "more palatable". They still think this is a battle about "branding" and nothing else. If they lose, and lose BIG with someone who espouses everything they do, they'll have to deal with reality, whether they like it or not.

I'm just trying to explain the logic behind my hunch.

But, I agree with everything you said 100%.

In other words, I'm not really optimistic about anything. I just think this might be our best chance. I also DO think it would be nice to let the right have their way in this nomination, so it can get squashed by reality. Furthermore, I think it would be nice to see some of them wake up to reality, so we could at least get back to dealing with a far-right that resembles Eisenhower, or Ford, rather than John Wilkes Booth.

Hil C. does not lead the Democratic Primary! Get yourself to the PRIMARY polls and caucus(I/A). LETS FINISH THIS FIGHT!
Reid Anderson·Sunday , December 20, 2015
The entire basis of her lead is tied to polls. There are zero other indicators that would point to a Hil lead in this Primary. Zero! In every other arena Hil shows no lead. In any arena where the power of selective polling is removed from the hands of establishment pollsters there is zero evidence that Hil is the frontrunner. It does not exist! It is a staged play for the world to see. It is a production intended to make you believe. It is called Narrative Creation and enough is enough! It is a lie they hope you will accept.

In the polls that EVERY single person who supports Hil cites as proof of her lead is the reality. I will not drag on about the polls. Check the demographics and the methodology in every individual poll. The ONLY demographic Hil leads in is those who meet the following 3 criteria. 1. Over age 50. 2. Voted in both the 2014 and 2012 Primaries. 3. Voted Democrat when they did. Outside of this specialized demographic the support is hugely in favor of Bernie Sanders.

Sorry Vardoz, but I'm doing my own polling and I've found that Hispanic men and women of ALL ages are voting for Hillary along with white women. Polling my republican friends, I find that NONE of them have made a decision.
Somehow I think Ted Cruz will be their choice, if they have to make one.

I'm not sure they DO understand. Too many on the right seem to live in an alternate universe where Obama is a foreign-born Muslim Communist who is illegally in office, closet lesbian Hillary Clinton murdered her secret lover Vince Foster and her husband, besides having raped several women, had been ineligible for the presidency because he had renounced his U.S. citizenship in order to go to Russia to be trained in subversion by the KGB.

Every single one of those claims is delusional, yet every single one is fervently believed by some right-wingers, even when they are inherently self-contradictory.

Republicans used to be rational (well, most of them did). Now it's as if the GOP has been conquered by an army of lunatics. I'm not sure what it will take to bring them back to reality, given that losing the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections has only driven them crazier.

Don’t you think the Kochs can and will pay whatever it takes to install the Republican candidate in the White House? And remember, electronic votes cannot be recounted.

Lobdillj....... .that is my biggest fear. Somehow, I think in the last presidential election the repugs underestimated our hackers.

I've never heard the expression "getting schlonged" but it just sounds obscene. I would not mind seeing this done to Trump -- right in his billion dollar Rump.

That would keep him quiet for a day or two.

"Schlong" is Yiddish for penis. It comes from the German, "schlange" for 'serpent.'

Jim Morrison was fond of that metaphor.

Heh-heh; it does have a bit of the sound of a galvanized metal garbage can lid hitting the "mother ship" container, which is just a little bit overfilled, with a certain amount of force.
Please don't apshlongoshize -ring the bell and win a coconut!

We need a nice nuclear war to sanitize away the Obama voters. Besides Nuclear Winter Cures Global Warming. We need to apply the same rules from banking and finance to university research grants, trial lawyers, and union funds. Defeated plaintiff attorneys should be subject to victorious defendent's malpractice suits. Professors molest more youth than clergy do. Privatize the university-grants complex (NSF, NIH, NOAA, NASA, NIST, NEH, NEA) so corporations may own university patents. Deport foreign born Obama voters for sedition.
