Facing recall, 5 PSWID board members quit

Five members of the Pine-Strawberry Water Improvement District (PSWID) suddenly resigned on Sat., Nov. 15, 2013, turning over management of the troubled district to the Gila County Board of Supervisors.

Four of the five board members who resigned were facing possible recall. Signatures collected were already over the minimum amount required for recall and this seems like an avoidance of accountability to the public.

Each PSWID resigning board member stated in their letters of resignation that the recall was a key factor in their decision. These five resigning board members violated the open meeting law by officially resigning on Saturday rather than completing this action on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, during a regularly scheduled PSWID meeting.

Ric Hawthorne, RECALL PSWID BOARD Comittee Chairman, urged the continuation of signature gathering as a way to demonstrate to the Gila County Board of Supervisors that a special election sooner than November 2014 is necessary.

“We need to continue collecting and gathering signatures for a show of strength and community resolve. Let’s keep the pressure on them and get as many signatures as we can and really show them what a ‘small group of discontents’ can accomplish.”
