Shipman Fire erupts near Kearny

A wildfire ignited in eastern Arizona Monday afternoon, quickly growing to 300 acres, burning through at least two structures and prompting evacuations.

The Shipman Fire began shortly after 5 p.m. near Kearny east of Florence and was burning through salt cedar trees in the river bed toward the Kearny airstrip, said Carrie Dennett, an Arizona State Forestry Division fire-prevention officer.

It wasn’t clear how close the fire was to the town Monday night, but the Stevens Court Trailer Park was evacuated shortly after the fire began, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple buildings may have been damaged, a spokesman said.

Pinal County Deputy Chief Steve Henry said about 50 people have been evacuated from the trailer park.

Kearny Mayor Sam Hosler said more homes were evacuated outside of the trailer park late Monday but could not say how many. The mayor was in the command post late working to evacuate horses and animals that residents left behind.
