Live Jazz at Community Presbyterian Church
800 West Main Street, Payson
2 p.m. Sunday, May 5th

Guitar Vocalist Joanie Smith-Reynolds
with
Upright string bassist & guitarist Steve Douglas
Drummer Gerry Reynolds

Joanie will be performing tunes from the Great American Songbook-- tunes which were popularized on Broadway, in the east, south and west to become America's standards over time. In a trio, she will be performing mostly jazz standards, and on a several tunesSteve Douglas will leave his bass to join her on guitar. A few country tunes will be included as well. Artists like Nora Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Michael Buble' are a few stars who based their careers on tunes taken from the Great American Songbook.

Here are a few samples of tunes that you may hear: The Nearness of You, Lonestar, Moonglow, Green Dolphin Street, I'm a Lucky So and So, Sway, Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You, Come Rain Come Shine.

Joanie grew up in a little town in north western New York state, Silver Creek, where she began playing at a very early age a new Gibson guitar her father gave her, and which she still plays, along with Martin, Dean and Ovation guitars. (What guitar player has only one guitar?!) With the mentoring and teaching by Dick Longdale, a respected New York City musician, Joanie learned guitar theory and chord progressions, which made her a superb rhythm player suitable for instrumental groups, and backing vocalists.

Moving forward to recent history, Joanie emerged from being a group musician to becoming a wonderful vocal guitar soloist. Her Italian heritage -- her family loved to sing and her father was an accomplished string and accordion player who had a band -- allowed her to play and sing everyday, often when the band practiced after hours in their family barbershop. Joanie is gifted with a soft alto voice that works so naturally with her guitar styling's. Hardly one to ever step freely into the spotlight, some urging and tugging was needed to have her return to doing a solo performance. Not to say she isn't prepared; Joanie has hundreds of tunes she loves to perform for you.
