Roundup hedges on IMG talks

If you ever doubted if the Roundup reads the Gazette Blog, here's what Editor Pete Aleshire wrote in Tuesday's paper regarding negotiations with IMG:

"Backers of the university plan say they have had informal discussions with a development company connected with IMG international and explored the idea through various backchannel links. However, IMG officials have denied any knowledge of the discussions on the record.

"(SLE Chairman and town official Mike) Vogel said the Alliance board has not had any conversations with IMG about a 1,000-student sports academy."

Nice try.  IMG not only denies discussions off as well as on the record, but also says its lawyers are looking into claims that "backchannel" (no such word in my Funk & Wagnalls) discussions have ever taken place.

Unlike some media outlets, the Gazette Blog stands by its story (which you can read by clicking the EDUCATION tab at the right).

sportscenterisnext has left a new comment on your post "IMG: we have ‘no involvement’ with Payson":

Jim, we the people of Payson don't have a choice! Fast Kenny and Slick Pete are the only ones doing the talking!

People want leadership; Payson has been lacking this since Bob Edwards was defeated; you'll notice our Mayor and T.C. run unopposed and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership.

People don't drink the sand 'cause they're thirsty. They drink the sand 'cause they don't know the difference.

Why is it Mike Vogel is on the town payroll? Exactly what are Mr. Vogel's duties? What JOBS has he brought to Payson?

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie and she is one smart investigative reporter.

Maybe someday they'll learn to check their sources before they get busted on the Gazette blog.

But, hey, if they haven't learned it in the past four years, chances are they never will.

That's for sure. Shoddy workmanship. It applies to journalism just as surely as it applies to carpentry or any other craft.

And that's being generous. What if there is something more sinister behind all of this? What if somebody or some group stands to make a killing at our expense?

The good news: Some private citizens with the background to do it are starting to look at the numbers and the people. Stand by.

That is good news. Somebody who knows what they're doing needs to be digging deep into this. Might start with the UA law professor who resigned from the SLE because she couldn't get any answers.

And now Vogel says we're going to get our "damn college." What a class act he is. Just the guy we want trying to bring a "world class university" to town. I'm sure they're impressed when they sit down at the bargaining table with him.

No wonder ASU is running away as fast as it can.
