Beware TV remote control in your hotel room

By Harriet Baskas

Next time you stay at a hotel, be sure to wash your hands after using the TV remote control.

“In our studies, it was often the most germy object in the room,” said Charles Gerba, an environmental microbiologist from the University of Arizona. “I think nobody ever cleans it.”

Gerba, known as “Dr. Germ,” has found E. coli on some remotes and avoids using the TV remote in his hotel rooms. Other travelers use the devices, but cover them with shower caps or condoms.
