PHOENIX – Highway improvement work will require Arizona State Route 87 traffic to be switched to one lane in each direction later this week along a six-mile section (mileposts 204-210) north of the Bush Highway/Saguaro Lake Turnoff, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Crews began establishing the work zone today earlier this week, with northbound SR 87 narrowed to one lane starting four miles north of the Bush Highway interchange. Southbound SR 87 traffic will be narrowed to one lane and shifted on Friday (Sept. 10) so both directions of traffic share the highway’s northbound lanes.
The traffic switch will allow crews to continue work on a $10.7 million project to add a mile-and-a-half stretch of a third southbound lane (mileposts 207-205.4), reinforce shoulders and embankments, modify slopes and make other safety improvements along SR 87. While work started in June, the traffic switch was scheduled this week to avoid impacting traffic over the Labor Day weekend.
The construction zone and traffic switch are scheduled to be in place until late spring 2011, with major restrictions lifted before next year’s Memorial Day weekend.
The overall project between New Four Peaks Road and Dos S Ranch Road also includes erosion control measures along a mile-long segment near milepost 212, south of the community of Sunflower.
ADOT encourages SR 87 drivers traveling between the Phoenix area and Payson to use caution in the work zone, including the stretch where two-way traffic will share the northbound lanes.
