LETTER: 45th anniversary of Medicare observed

Editor:

On the 45th anniversary of the day President Johnson signed Medicare into law, we are reminded of the vital role that Medicare plays in the lives of American seniors.

In 1965, millions of seniors did not have adequate health insurance coverage. Many struggled to pay the cost of their medical care, and some were forced to pass on large medical bills to their children.

Medicare changed their lives for the better, and it has since brought peace of mind and better health to generations of senior citizens by ensuring they receive the care they need at prices they can afford.

The Affordable Care Act signed by President Obama this March marks another victory for Medicare. By fighting waste, fraud, and abuse and beginning to close the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap known as the ‘doughnut hole’, the Affordable Care Act will help keep Medicare fiscally sound for years to come.

These changes help to guarantee millions of seniors will continue to receive the benefits and health care they rely on. That is why OFA supporters in Arizona worked so hard and made hundreds of thousands of calls to Congress, sent hundreds of thousands of letters, and held tens of thousands of events to make the case for this historic reform to their members of Congress. And thanks to our volunteers and the hard-work of President Obama and Congressional Democrats, these health care benefits are now law.”
