Church leader Derenna Fortner is dead at 104

Derenna Ellen (Freeland) Fortner, born July 9, 1906, age 104, of Payson, Ariz. (formerly of Phoenix, Ariz. and Effingham, Ill.) went to be with the Lord on Aug. 13, 2010. She was the wife of Walter (1906-1980); mother of Yvonne House, Matthews, N.C.; Lois Ward, Santa Cruz, Calif.; Mary England, Payson; and Phyllis Burris, Phoenix; Grandmother of 11; Great-grandmother of 14; and Great-great-grandmother of 2.

She was active in her community and church having served as church treasurer for 25 years; music director; member of  board of trustees; Sunday school teacher and Missionary Society president. She served many years as an Illinois Church of God camp counselor. She also held several offices on the Illinois State Missionary Board of the Church of God: serving as presiding council chair; council secretary; publications director and state treasurer. She was a PTA president; a Girl Scout leader and district council chairman.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker, grandparent, mentor and friend.

Graveside services and interment will be held at a later date in Effingham, Ill. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to Church of God World Service, Anderson, Indiana 46012.
