Eagles, wonders of water part of Outdoors Day

MESA (June 4, 2010) – Mesa Ranger District staff members are sponsoring a family conservation education event at the Acacia Recreation Site at Canyon Lake on the Tonto National Forest 9 a.m. to noon June 12.

“We are sponsoring this event in celebration of National Get Outdoors Day, a nation-wide awareness event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun for people of all ages, abilities, and interests. This is a great opportunity for our visitors to learn more about our forest in a fun family-oriented environment,” said Therese Mendoza, Fire Prevention Officer with the Mesa Ranger District.

The district’s wildlife biologist will share information on local bald eagles and bighorn sheep. Visitors will learn about the local watershed through “The Wonders of Water” discussion. In an introduction to orienteering, there will also be an opportunity to learn how to use a map and compass for navigation.

“We look forward to visitors and their families attending this event to learn more about the forest during a fun morning of activities,” Mendoza said. “Smokey Bear, our beloved national symbol of wildfire prevention, will be attending our activities as part of our wildfire prevention education segment.”
