Group seeks 'Wild, Scenic' status for upper Verde

A wild segment of the upper Verde River below Duff Spring at base flow, after flood. The upper Verde River is deeply threatened by population growth, destructive recreation, insufficient management, invasive species, water pollution, and groundwater mining. Yet, it is critical habitat for several species protected by the Endangered Species Act, home to many species of special concern, and it is one of Arizona's last living rivers. The Sierra Club, in partnership with other Arizona environmental groups, is proposing to protect the upper Verde by requesting congressional designation as a Wild and Scenic River. Come learn how Wild and Scenic River status will help protect the upper Verde. Gary Beverly, Outings Chair for the Yavapai Group, will present photos of the upper Verde and describe the proposal at this event: April 13 (Tuesday) 7 p.m. Yavapai Group (Sierra Club) Public Meeting at Prescott Public Library Founders' Room, 215 E. Goodwin St. For questions, call Tom Slaback at 928-778-4233 or email prescottkid@peoplepc.com
